Spring's coming! And new Ebey's Prairie CSA!

I admit.  It's been real nice to sleep in these past few weeks.  And to take naps.  And to read by the fire.  But...I'm starting to get that springtime itch!  For a farmer, there is nothing like the promise of a new season to get you excited.  Something about eternal optimism, or wiping the slate clean, or...just plain nuts perhaps!  "Spring fever" is an apt way to describe it.

Baby Pac Choi - always one of the first springtime crops!

And yesterday's interlude of sunny weather really got that spring-time itch going. That combined with the 20+ glossy seed catalogs that are stacked up next to the couch.   So...had to go out and start 600 heads of lettuce and a couple 100 row feet of assorted mesclun mix items.  Just a little something!
Early head lettuce under cover!  Coming soon!

Oh, and inspect the garlic field - the little plants are really starting to come on strong with all our recent mild weather.  Ooh-ooh-ooh!  Just thinking about all that fresh garlic gets this farmer's heart a pitter-patting!
For those of you looking to find some fresh veggies, well, it's going to be a few more weeks yet.  Willowood will be restocking the shelves at Bayleaf in Coupeville over the next few weeks with stored potatoes, garlic and dry beans but fresh greens and all the lovely goodness of springtime will be more likely to show up sometime in March.

We would also like to pass on the word about a new CSA (community subscribed agriculture) being offered by our good friends at Prairie Bottom Farm.  Many of you know that Wilbur and Julieanna Purdue partner with Willowood in our Coupeville and Bayview farmers markets booth.

Now Wilbur and Julieanna are looking to add a CSA to their growing farm operations (Willowood does not currently offer a CSA program) although they assure me they are still planning to do the farmer's markets as well.   They have a new website and lots of information on their great new offering.  They are signing up members for the 2010 season right now so check it out!

As always, thanks for all your support and we promise - fresh local veggies will be back on the shelves before you know it!
